Exceptional heat event expected in Metro Vancouver
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for the Metro Vancouver region, starting from Saturday, June 7, 2025, due to rising and persistent high temperatures expected throughout the weekend and into early next week.
According to the notice released on the afternoon of Thursday, June 5, an early season heat event is underway, driven by a ridge of high pressure settling over the area.
Rapidly climbing temperatures and unusually warm nights
Daytime highs are forecast to reach 29°C (84°F) in inland areas, potentially climbing to 30–32°C (86–90°F) in some locations. Overnight lows will remain elevated, between 13 and 17°C (55–63°F), offering little overnight relief. This kind of weather pattern can be especially dangerous for homes without adequate ventilation.
First official heat-related statement of the year
This is the first heat-related special weather statement of 2025 issued by ECCC for Metro Vancouver. The fact that this event is occurring early in the season adds concern, as residents are not yet physiologically acclimatized to such temperatures.
Health risks and advice from ECCC
Environment Canada warns that fans alone are not sufficient to lower core body temperature, particularly for older adults. Signs of heat-related illness may include heavy sweating, skin rashes, muscle cramps, fainting, high body temperature, and worsening of pre-existing medical conditions.
The agency is encouraging residents to keep their homes cool, ideally by creating cross-breezes or relocating to air-conditioned spaces during the hottest parts of the day.
Forecast outlook for the coming days
Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 will see steadily climbing temperatures across Metro Vancouver, especially in areas further from the coast. The influence of the high-pressure system will remain in place into Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10, with temperatures staying above seasonal norms.
ECCC will continue to monitor the situation and may upgrade the statement to a higher-level heat alert in the coming days.
