A very wet weekend is on the way for southern Alberta<\/strong>, with rainfall totals potentially exceeding 200 millimetres<\/strong> in some areas, particularly along the southern Rocky Mountain foothills<\/strong>. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)<\/strong>, a large weather system is moving in, bringing intense rain<\/strong>, strong winds<\/strong>, and even heavy, wet snow over higher elevations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Christy Climenhaga<\/strong>, a meteorologist with ECCC<\/strong>, explained that the incoming system<\/strong> is being driven by a low-pressure area forming just south of the U.S. border<\/strong>, which is drawing moisture northward into Alberta<\/strong>. This system is vertically stacked<\/strong>, allowing for enhanced precipitation<\/strong> throughout the atmosphere.<\/p>\n The rain will begin Friday<\/strong> and intensify over the southern foothills<\/strong>, with widespread totals between 50 and 100 mm<\/strong>, and localized amounts possibly reaching 200 mm<\/strong>. Areas most likely to be impacted<\/strong> include High River<\/strong>, Pincher Creek<\/strong>, Waterton<\/strong>, and southern sections of Highway 22<\/strong>.<\/p>\n As colder air settles into the region Friday night<\/strong>, precipitation over higher terrain will transition to snow<\/strong>. This will result in very wet and heavy snowfall<\/strong>, particularly in areas such as Highwood Pass<\/strong> and elevated stretches of Highway 93 South<\/strong>, where accumulations between 10 and 20 centimetres<\/strong> are possible. Snow amounts will vary depending on elevation and local temperatures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Winds from the north will strengthen on Saturday<\/strong>, with gusts between 60 and 80 km\/h<\/strong> expected. Combined with already saturated ground<\/strong>, these winds could cause tree damage<\/strong> and localized power outages<\/strong>, depending on how the system evolves.<\/p>\n While systems like this are not unprecedented<\/strong>, they are still notable<\/strong>. Climenhaga pointed to a major June 2022 event<\/strong>, when Calgary received 79 mm of rain<\/strong>, and the Kananaskis region saw over 200 mm<\/strong> between June 12 and 15<\/strong>.
