OTTAWA, Ontario<\/strong> \u2013 As of Thursday, July 24, 2025<\/strong>, central and eastern parts of Ontario<\/strong> are facing a heightened threat of severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes<\/strong>, especially late this evening and overnight<\/strong>. The summer heat<\/strong> that\u2019s settled across much of the province is expected to act as a trigger<\/strong> for a volatile storm system, which could bring widespread impacts<\/strong> from Essex County<\/strong> all the way through to Northeastern Ontario<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n High-resolution forecasts are pointing to the development of a powerful mesoscale convective system (MCS)<\/strong>, particularly in areas stretching from the Bruce Peninsula<\/strong> across to Muskoka<\/strong>, Algonquin<\/strong>, and potentially extending into Eastern Ontario<\/strong>. This system could bring damaging wind gusts<\/strong> above 100 km\/h<\/strong> (62 mph), large hail<\/strong>, localized flash flooding<\/strong>, and intense lightning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Severe weather conditions<\/strong> may begin in the afternoon hours<\/strong> for parts of Northeastern Ontario<\/strong>, but the most widespread risk<\/strong> is expected from late afternoon into the night<\/strong>, especially as the storms move eastward towards Quebec<\/strong>. Areas under the strongest threat<\/strong> are highlighted in Environment Canada\u2019s level 2 of 4 risk zone<\/strong>, which includes Southwestern Ontario<\/strong>, the Greater Golden Horseshoe<\/strong>, and parts of Eastern Ontario<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Some forecast models are showing early storm development in the late afternoon<\/strong>, but the greater likelihood<\/strong> is for more intense thunderstorms<\/strong> to occur after sunset<\/strong>, making overnight conditions particularly hazardous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Storm hazards include:<\/p>\n Damaging winds<\/strong> that may exceed 100 km\/h<\/strong> (62 mph), particularly where storm lines<\/strong> form and intensify. <\/p>\n In Southern and Northeastern Ontario<\/strong>, the threat window<\/strong> spans from mid-afternoon<\/strong> into the early morning hours<\/strong> of Friday<\/strong>, with a moderate likelihood of hail<\/strong>, tornadoes<\/strong>, and localized flooding<\/strong>. This includes areas such as North Bay<\/strong>, Sudbury<\/strong>, Temiskaming Shores<\/strong>, Huntsville<\/strong>, and Barrie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In Southwestern and Eastern Ontario<\/strong>, including the Greater Golden Horseshoe<\/strong>, the focus is on intense rainfall<\/strong> and gusty winds<\/strong> beginning later this evening<\/strong>.
