Between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, central and southern Minnesota saw a substantial amount of rainfall, with several areas surpassing two inches. While parts of the Twin Cities metro, such as Richfield, Bloomington, and Eden Prairie, recorded totals between 1.63 and 1.76 inches, some outstate communities experienced even more significant downpours.
New Ulm recorded the highest rainfall
The highest total reported came from New Ulm, where 2.5 inches (63.5 mm) of rain were measured. This figure places New Ulm at the top of the rainfall list for this recent storm event. Other locations also experienced notable totals:
- Hutchinson received 2.14 inches (54.4 mm)
- Northfield saw 2.11 inches (53.6 mm)
- Essig and Arlington both came in just above 2 inches (50.8 mm)
Twin Cities metro sees less, but still a solid soaking
In the metro area, Richfield led with 1.76 inches (44.7 mm), followed by Bloomington with 1.65 inches (41.9 mm) and Eden Prairie at 1.63 inches (41.4 mm). These amounts represent a significant rainfall event for May, especially considering some earlier dry spells in the region.
Rainfall diminishing, but isolated showers linger
As of Tuesday afternoon, the rain has largely tapered off, though occasional showers may still appear through the evening hours. This break in precipitation offers a chance for soil absorption and a brief reprieve from the wet weather.
