Sticky air and steamy skies on Thursday
HOUSTON — After a brief and refreshing pause, the soupy humidity that defines late May in Southeast Texas has returned in full force this Thursday morning. The cold front that temporarily brought down dew points and gave residents a taste of drier air has reversed direction, returning as a warm front and bringing back the mugginess many had hoped was gone for longer.
The dew point values surged again overnight, causing dense and patchy fog in some areas. Although morning temperatures were slightly lower than Wednesday, the air felt oppressively moist, especially across Greater Houston.
Afternoon highs are forecast to reach the lower to mid-90s°F (33–35°C), under partly to mostly cloudy skies. With persistent onshore flow, scattered downpours could develop along the Texas 35 corridor, mostly tied to coastal sea breeze activity.
Hot and dry conditions return for Friday and Saturday
Heading into the start of the Memorial Day weekend, Friday and Saturday look to remain mostly dry and sunny, though hot and humid. Houston temperatures are expected to climb to around 95°F (35°C), and heat index values may approach 100°F (38°C).
While afternoon showers are not expected to be widespread, a rogue coastal storm may still sneak through. With onshore winds continuing, humid conditions will persist across Southeast Texas.
Rain builds in late Sunday into Memorial Day
A more significant weather shift arrives late Sunday, as a cold front pushes toward Southeast Texas. This will increase the potential for heavier showers and thunderstorms, particularly on Memorial Day Monday. Localized flooding becomes a concern from Sunday night through Monday, especially in areas north of Interstate 10 and the Brazos River Valley.
While it’s too early to lock in exact rainfall amounts, models project that one to two inches (25–50 mm) of rainfall may accumulate by Tuesday, with some isolated areas seeing even higher totals. Despite this, storms are not expected to be persistent or widespread enough to cancel Memorial Day plans entirely, but having a backup indoor option is advisable for any outdoor gatherings.
Stay tuned for updated forecasts as the holiday weekend approaches.
