Severe thunderstorms bring gusty winds and hail to northeast Florida
Saturday afternoon, a line of intense thunderstorms is sweeping across parts of Northeast Florida, specifically Flagler and Putnam counties, prompting multiple weather advisories. The National Weather Service has reported wind gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour (circa 80 km/h) and hail the size of peas, spotted via radar over Putnam County.
Active weather warnings and flood advisory
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is currently active for both Flagler and Putnam counties until 4:30 PM, though meteorologists warn that the atmospheric instability could cause this warning to be extended into the evening, especially as the storm system pushes eastward toward the Atlantic coast and local beaches.
Meanwhile, Putnam County is under a Flood Advisory through 6:30 PM, as heavy rainfall continues to impact the area. The storm system, producing intense downpours, frequent lightning, and hail, poses a risk for localized flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
Surrounding counties also impacted
To the south, Volusia County is under a Thunderstorm Warning until 5 PM, as the storm cells continue moving east-northeast. Although most of Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida are expected to remain storm-free for the rest of Saturday, Flagler, Putnam, and Volusia residents are experiencing the brunt of this severe weather.
Residents and commuters along coastal areas should remain alert as this storm cluster heads toward beachfront communities, where wind hazards and sudden bursts of rainfall could develop quickly.
Stay tuned for real-time updates and watch for any extensions or new advisories from the National Weather Service.
