Severe weather winds down across central Alabama
After a stormy Monday evening across central Alabama, conditions are beginning to calm down, especially north of Interstate 20. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch for areas south of I-20 has now been cancelled, and most of the remaining showers and storms are shifting east. By 10 p.m., skies are expected to be mostly dry, with clouds lingering overnight. Temperatures will dip into the upper 60s (around 20°C), and some patchy fog could develop early Tuesday morning in a few localized spots.
First Alert Weather Day Tuesday: more storms likely
Tuesday, May 27, has been declared a First Alert Weather Day due to the increased risk for more stormy conditions. The morning is expected to remain mostly quiet, with just a few scattered showers, but a cluster of storms is forecast to move from Mississippi into west Alabama by noon. This system will bring the potential for strong to severe storms across central Alabama from 12 p.m. through 8 p.m.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed southern regions below I-20 under a slight risk (level 2 out of 5), while areas to the north are under a marginal risk (level 1 out of 5). The main threats will be damaging winds up to 60 mph, large hail, and possibly isolated flooding in areas that receive heavier downpours. Skies will remain mostly cloudy, with highs reaching the low 80s (around 27–28°C) and southwest winds blowing at 5 to 10 mph.
Stormy weather pattern through Friday
This active weather pattern will linger through Friday, as a northwest flow continues to funnel rounds of showers and storms across the region. Each day through Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will carry a 60% chance of rain, mainly concentrated in the afternoon and evening.
Wednesday’s storms are expected to ramp up in the evening and overnight hours, and a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) remains in place for most of the week. Isolated severe storms and localized flooding remain possible each day. On Friday, storm chances shift south of I-20, and drier conditions are expected to develop over central Alabama by the evening.
Temperatures throughout the week will hold steady, with daytime highs in the low 80s (about 27–28°C) and overnight lows in the upper 60s (19–20°C). On Friday, rain chances dip to 40%, and highs will fall slightly to the mid and upper 70s (24–26°C). Expect 2 to 3 inches of rainfall across central Alabama over the next few days, with locally higher totals possible.
Weekend forecast: a cooler start to June
Looking ahead to the weekend, the final days of May and the start of June are expected to bring below-average temperatures. Saturday is shaping up to be partly cloudy and dry, with a morning low in the upper 50s (around 15°C) and an afternoon high in the upper 70s to low 80s (25–27°C), paired with lower humidity—a refreshing change from the muggy week.
On Sunday, a few weather models are suggesting a return of scattered showers or storms, so the day may not stay completely dry. The rain chance will hold around 20%, with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the lower 80s (27–28°C). As we move through the next couple of days, greater clarity on the weekend’s storm chances will emerge.
