Frost advisory early Monday in Western and Southern New York
The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for several regions across New York State, signaling the likelihood of temperatures dropping into the low 30s Fahrenheit (around 0.5°C to 1.7°C) during the early hours of Monday, June 2.
Timing and affected areas
In Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties, including Olean and Wellsville, the advisory will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m.. Farther east and southeast, including Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Steuben, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties, the advisory will last from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. on the same morning.
Expected conditions
Clear skies combined with calm winds will allow overnight temperatures to fall into the mid-30s (around 1.7°C), with some sheltered valleys possibly reaching 33°F (0.5°C). These conditions are ideal for frost formation, particularly in low-lying or shaded areas.
Potential impacts
This early June frost could harm or kill delicate outdoor vegetation, particularly flowering plants, seedlings, or sensitive crops if not properly protected. Gardeners and farmers in the impacted zones should remain vigilant.
Local meteorologists emphasize that the brief but potentially damaging cold snap is unusual for this time of year, especially considering recent warm conditions across New York.
Protective measures suggested
While not mandatory, residents are strongly encouraged to move potted plants indoors and to cover any vulnerable outdoor plants with fabric or frost cloths to shield them from possible cold damage during the early morning hours.
This advisory will expire by Monday morning, but the cool start to the week may persist in some rural areas.
