Wednesday, June 4, the Parma City Schools district in Ohio announced the closure of all schools and activities due to extremely high temperatures and poor air quality.
Intense heat and high humidity in Parma
Meteorologist Scott Sabol stated that today will be the hottest and most humid day of the week. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s Fahrenheit (around 29–30 °C), with wind gusts of 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. The combination of heat and humidity poses a serious challenge for students and staff, especially in school buildings lacking proper air conditioning.
Wildfire smoke worsens air quality
In addition to the heat, a plume of wildfire smoke has moved into the area and is expected to linger throughout the day. The National Weather Service has issued an Air Quality Advisory for multiple northeast Ohio counties, including Cuyahoga, warning that conditions will be unhealthy for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory issues.
Cancellations and upcoming school calendar
All school functions scheduled for Wednesday, June 4 have been cancelled. According to the official district calendar, the last day of school for students is Thursday, June 12.
Local authorities are continuing to monitor weather conditions and air quality updates closely.
