Hot air invades Snohomish County this Sunday and Monday

EVERETT, Washington — A brief but intense burst of heat is set to arrive across Snohomish County and the broader Western Washington region beginning Sunday morning, with temperatures climbing well above the seasonal norm.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory effective from 10 a.m. Sunday to 10 p.m. Monday, predicting daytime highs between 85°F and 90°F (29°C to 32°C). Cascade valley communities may experience even hotter conditions. Evening lows are expected to remain mild, hovering between 55°F and 65°F (13°C to 18°C), which could reduce overnight relief.

As of Friday, Everett is forecast to reach 83°F (28°C) on Sunday, while locations further inland, such as Gold Bar, may climb to a sizzling 89°F (32°C). According to Logan Howard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, this warm surge is well above average for early June, when the Central Puget Sound region typically sees highs around 70°F (21°C).

Moderate health risks under rising heat

This early-summer heat event is classified as posing a moderate heat risk, particularly for vulnerable individuals who are elderly, chronically ill, or lack access to air conditioning or hydration. Residents are advised to remain aware of signs of heat exhaustion and to avoid prolonged sun exposure, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Those seeking relief in local rivers, lakes, or the Puget Sound should be mindful: water temperatures remain cold, ranging from the upper 40s°F to low 50s°F (8°C to 12°C). The risk of cold shock and drowning is real, even for confident swimmers, especially given the deceptive contrast between air and water temperatures.

Cooling centers open across Snohomish County

To help residents cope with the heat, 26 cooling centers will be open across Snohomish County. Key locations include the Darrington Library, Stilly Valley Center in Arlington, and the Everett Public Library. A full list of available centers and their hours is accessible at: https://tinyurl.com/mr2hn2k8.

Heat breaks by midweek

After the two-day heat wave, temperatures are forecast to return closer to normal. By Wednesday, Everett is expected to see a high of 73°F (23°C) — a noticeable cool-down after a hot start to the week.
