Hazardous winds, downed trees, and power outages have severely impacted communities in northern Alabama and southern Tennessee.
Substation failure causes widespread outages in Hazel Green
By 4:30 p.m., a new outage linked to a substation issue in Hazel Green brought the total number of residents without electricity to 2,523. Crews from Huntsville Utilities are actively working on repairs, though no specific restoration times are available.
Multiple power lines are reported down on Green Mountain Road, rendering the road impassable. Residents are urged to stay clear of the area while emergency teams operate.
Over 1,200 customers left without power by mid-afternoon
As of 3:15 p.m., 1,247 customers were experiencing service interruptions after a strong storm system swept through the Huntsville service area. Huntsville Utilities Electric Operations teams continue their efforts to restore power, while emphasizing safety and caution around downed lines and storm debris.
Citizens are reminded not to approach or touch power lines, and to report any hazard or outage to 256-535-4448 (LIGHT).
Fallen trees block roads in central Huntsville
At 2:40 p.m., a tree was toppled by intense winds at the intersection of Oakwood Avenue and Jordan Lane, obstructing traffic and causing concern among residents. Clean-up crews have been dispatched.
Severe thunderstorm warnings issued repeatedly throughout the day
The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for multiple counties in Alabama and Tennessee throughout Saturday:
2:24 p.m. — Jackson, Madison, and Franklin (TN) Counties were warned about a thunderstorm with 60 mph wind gusts, moving east near Marshall Space Flight Center.
2:03 p.m. — A cell was detected 9 miles west of Ardmore moving east at 55 mph, triggering alerts for Madison, Limestone, Moore, Lincoln (TN), and Franklin (TN) counties.
1:47 p.m. — Warnings included Marshall, Madison, Cullman, Morgan, and Lawrence counties.
1:07 p.m. — A broader system impacted Madison, Limestone, Lauderdale, Colbert, Cullman, Franklin, Morgan, and Lawrence counties.
Thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 6 p.m.
By 11:52 a.m., a severe thunderstorm watch was put into effect for 11 counties in northern Alabama, including Cullman, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, DeKalb, Jackson, Marshall, Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, and Lawrence.
Three counties in southern Tennessee — Franklin, Lincoln, and Moore — are also under this advisory until 6:00 p.m..
