Triple-digit temperatures scorch Albuquerque
As of Sunday, June 15, New Mexico is facing its first major heat wave of the year, with temperatures soaring past 100°F (38°C) just days ahead of the official start of summer. The New Mexico Department of Health has issued urgent warnings, urging residents across the state to take serious precautions to stay protected in the extreme heat.
Albuquerque in particular is seeing a spike in heat-related safety concerns, especially with multiple public events taking place this weekend. The City of Albuquerque is working proactively to keep the community cool, safe, and hydrated.
Cooling centers and community relief
To help locals beat the heat, community cooling centers and splash pads have been activated throughout Albuquerque. These centers offer not only air conditioning, but also provide cooling kits that include sunscreen, chilled or refillable water bottles, cooling towels, food boxes, diapers, formula, and even clothing for those in need.
According to Maria Wolfe, the City of Albuquerque Homeless Innovations Officer, one of the simplest and fastest remedies for heat exhaustion is a cooling towel: “Dip it in ice water, wrap it around your neck, or even cover your head to cool your body quickly,” she explains.
Staying hydrated and sun smart
Doctors emphasize that hydration is critical during these dangerous conditions. Dr. Deeptej Singh, dermatologist and founder of Sandia Dermatology, underscores the importance of UV protection: “Always carry sunscreen, wear protective clothing, avoid the sun during peak hours, and seek shade whenever possible.”
Wolfe echoes the importance of community awareness: “If you have an elderly neighbor, a new parent, or see an unhoused person, check on them. Bring them ice water or a cooling towel—these small acts can make a big difference.”
Where to find help
A complete list of cooling center and splash pad locations, as well as their operating hours, can be found on the City of Albuquerque website. Residents can also donate supplies by purchasing items from the Amazon Wishlist linked on the CABQ website.
With summer heat arriving early in New Mexico, staying cool, hydrated, and community-minded is more important than ever.
