Brad Edwards back on TV July 1 at WHO 13
After stepping away in January from a 28-year career at WOI Local 5, longtime meteorologist Brad Edwards is officially returning to local news. Starting July 1, Edwards will join WHO 13 as a contributing meteorologist, a role that lets him stay involved in forecasting while keeping a flexible schedule.
A custom comeback: freedom meets passion
Edwards shared his excitement about the new opportunity, saying the job allows him to remain semi-retired and choose his own schedule. “I really don’t want to be full-time necessarily,” he said on June 13. “So this is perfect.”
His contract is on-call: viewers might see him on weekends, but depending on demand, he could work up to 40 hours a week—or just once a month. It all depends on what the station needs and what Edwards wants to take on.
A familiar team and trusted talent
WHO 13, based in Des Moines, Iowa, is welcoming back Edwards alongside fellow former WOI Local 5 colleagues, including Amanda Krenz and Lisa Carponelli. Edwards praised the station’s strategy of bringing back proven names: “WHO is trying to get the best people available on their team, even if it’s a contributing role.”
A strong and flexible weather team
Edwards joins other contributing meteorologists like Jason Parkins and Metinka Slater, as well as the full-time team led by chief meteorologist Ed Wilson, along with Gabe Prough, Jeriann Ritter, and Megan Salois.
Meanwhile, his former station WOI Local 5 recently hired Chase Bullman as its second meteorologist, showing ongoing changes in the local weather broadcasting landscape.
Air time? It all depends
Edwards could appear anytime, though weekends are most likely. As a WHO 13 employee, he’ll remain active as long as the agreement lasts. “I am very excited to join Channel 13 and excited to get back on the air,” he said.
His return marks a new chapter—experienced, relaxed, and still passionate—in the world of Iowa weather broadcasting.
