Severe weather swept through Memphis early Thursday morning, knocking out electricity to more than 12,000 customers of Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW). As of this morning, 12,577 residents remain without power across the Mid-South.
Most of the region is currently under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms, with the National Weather Service issuing a flash flood warning for both Shelby County and Tipton County.
The damaging weather system moved through during the early hours, triggering widespread outages and potential hazards. Heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning were reported across parts of Tennessee, with several power lines and trees brought down by the storms.
MLGW encourages residents to use the MLGW outage map available at mlgw.com or via the MLGW mobile app to monitor outages and report new ones. For emergencies involving downed power lines, customers are urged to call (901) 528-4465 and to keep a safe distance, treating all lines as live and dangerous.
Current temperatures in Memphis are hovering near 75°F (24°C) with high humidity, and additional rounds of rain and isolated thunderstorms are possible through the rest of Thursday.
