A potential tropical depression or Tropical Storm Andrea could briefly emerge in the central Atlantic Ocean on Monday, marking the first named system of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
Invest 90L becomes first monitored system of 2025
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is currently tracking Invest 90L, the first officially designated area of tropical interest this season. As of Monday morning, this low-pressure system, located roughly 600 miles east of Bermuda, remains disorganized, with showers and thunderstorms displaced to its east.
The term “Invest” refers to a system that the NHC is actively monitoring for potential development into a tropical depression or tropical storm within the next seven days. In this case, Invest 90L could briefly strengthen under marginally favorable conditions, with the potential to become a short-lived tropical cyclone before the atmosphere becomes more hostile on Tuesday.
High chance of development, but no land threat
The NHC has assigned Invest 90L a high probability of development over the next 48 hours. Should the system organize further and reach tropical storm strength, it would be named Andrea, following the official Atlantic hurricane naming list.
Despite the development potential, this disturbance is moving northeast at around 10 mph (16 km/h) across the open waters of the central Atlantic and is not expected to impact any land areas.
Historically, the first named storm in an average Atlantic hurricane season forms around June 20, placing Andrea—if it forms—well within expected seasonal timing. The 2025 hurricane season, which officially began on June 1 and ends on November 30, had seen no tropical activity until now.
Hostile conditions likely to halt development by Tuesday, but for now, Invest 90L remains the main feature of interest as the tropical Atlantic slowly enters its peak development period.
