Heavy heat and hailstorms sweep across Spain on Monday, June 30
The extreme summer heat gripping Spain continues today, Monday, June 30, with maximum temperatures expected to soar up to 108°F (42°C) across various communities, especially in Andalucía and Extremadura. Simultaneously, intense thunderstorms with hail are forecast to strike large portions of the country, according to the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET).
Heat alerts expanded across multiple regions
An orange-level alert, indicating major heat risk, remains in effect across vast areas of the country. This includes Andalucía, Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, Cataluña, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja, and the Comunidad Valenciana. These areas are bracing for scorching temperatures, especially during the peak afternoon hours.
A yellow alert, signifying moderate risk, has been issued for Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Murcia, and the Canary Islands. In Gran Canaria, the heat could spike up to 93°F (34°C), while wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph (70 km/h) are also expected across various islands.
Record-breaking temperatures in the south and northeast
Across the Iberian Peninsula, temperatures will climb drastically, with the highest readings focused in the southern interior. In Andalucía and Extremadura, some regions—including the Córdoba and Sevilla countryside, the Guadalquivir Valley in Jaén, and zones like Morena, Condado, and the Guadiana river plains in Badajoz—are forecast to hit 108°F (42°C).
Several other provinces will also endure oppressive heat. In Huelva, towns such as Aracena, Andévalo, and Condado are projected to reach up to 106°F (41°C). In Valencia’s interior south, the mercury could hit 104°F (40°C), with nighttime temperatures remaining uncomfortably high.
Cataluña, particularly Lleida and Tarragona, as well as areas near the Ebro river in Zaragoza and southern Huesca, will also endure extreme conditions. In Badajoz, both the Extremaduran Siberia and Barros y Serena are facing heat levels rarely seen this early in the season.
Severe thunderstorms and hailstorms on the horizon
Meanwhile, AEMET is warning of severe thunderstorms, possibly accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts, expected later in the day. The most affected areas include Madrid, Castilla y León, Asturias, Cantabria, Cataluña, and parts of Galicia.
A yellow storm warning has also been issued for Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, and Cataluña, where intense electrical activity, hail, and sudden downpours could cause localized disruptions.
