Hot and humid weather builds across Minnesota as the Fourth approaches
MINNESOTA — Tuesday, July 2, 2025, 8:00 a.m. (local time, New York) – After a sun-filled and pleasant start to July, the atmosphere over Minnesota is shifting quickly. Meteorologist Sven Sundgaard reports a surge in humidity that will increase the likelihood of thunderstorms as the holiday week continues, especially moving into the weekend.
Comfortable sunshine kicks off the week
Monday, July 1 brought abundant sunshine and comfortable temperatures across Minnesota, with highs ranging in the upper 70s to low 80s (77–83°F / 25–28°C) and low dew points, making for a perfect start to the month.
Storm chances increase starting Wednesday
As we move through Wednesday, July 3, expect scattered thunderstorms to develop, particularly in northern and southwestern Minnesota early in the day. A few isolated cells may pop up in the afternoon, but widespread activity is not expected until later in the week.
Friday night and Saturday: best chance for storms
The return of humid air will be noticeable by Friday, with dew points climbing back into the upper 60s and low 70s°F (20–22°C). This moisture-laden atmosphere sets the stage for more organized storms beginning Friday evening and continuing into Saturday, July 6. These storms could be strong, especially in central and southern Minnesota, where instability is expected to be highest.
Less humid conditions return after the weekend
A shift in air masses is expected by Sunday, bringing cooler, drier air and lower humidity through Monday, providing some relief after what could be a stormy and sticky weekend for many in Minnesota.
