Rainfall ends early in northern Minnesota as showers linger

DULUTH, Minnesota — Saturday, July 5, 2025, 4:29 p.m. EDT — Northern Minnesota wrapped up a series of intense rainstorms earlier than expected this weekend, but sporadic showers are still being reported across various regions of the state.

According to the National Weather Service, several locations in Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, and Cook Counties recorded significant rainfall totals, especially in Cass County, where the heaviest amounts were measured.

Aitkin County saw steady precipitation, with Hill City Remote Automatic Weather Station recording 1.84 inches (46.7 mm), followed closely by Tamarack Lake with 1.83 inches (46.5 mm) and the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge at 1.75 inches (44.5 mm).

In Carlton County, Wright received 1.49 inches (37.8 mm), while Cloquet and Esko measured 0.91 inches (23.1 mm) and 0.76 inches (19.3 mm), respectively.

Cass County experienced the most substantial totals, led by Boy River with a notable 3.09 inches (78.5 mm), followed by Whipholt at 2.49 inches (63.2 mm) and Remer with 2.35 inches (59.7 mm).

In Cook County, rainfall was lighter but still significant. Grand Marais saw 1.33 inches (33.8 mm), while Sea Gull Lake reported 1.11 inches (28.2 mm).

These totals reflect storm activity that moved through the northland ahead of the weekend, leaving much of northern Minnesota wet and cooler under cloudy skies.
