STATEN ISLAND, New York — The start of July is rolling in with intense humidity, heavy rain, and the ever-familiar New York City stickiness. If you were hoping for a break, this week isn’t bringing one.
Sunday began with sunlight, scattered clouds, and a gentle breeze, pushing temperatures up to 89°F (32°C). But as the sun set, moisture levels crept up, setting the tone for what’s to come.
Heading into Monday, the mugginess ramps up as thunderstorms develop late in the morning and persist into the afternoon. Although the high will technically be 82°F (28°C), the AccuWeather RealFeel® shoots up to 92°F (33°C) — making for a heavy, tropical-style atmosphere across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and into Staten Island.
Tuesday brings a hotter surge, with the thermometer climbing to 90°F (32°C) and a RealFeel of 99°F (37°C). AccuWeather warns of widespread cloud cover, oppressive humidity, and “a couple of showers and a thunderstorm, mainly later; storms can bring flooding downpours and localized damaging wind gusts.” Commuters across Queens and The Bronx should stay alert for possible flash flooding and street-level water accumulation.
As for Wednesday, the atmosphere doesn’t ease up. Expect scattered thunderstorms popping up “in parts of the area” throughout the day, with some sunlight breaking through the clouds. Temperatures will hover around 87°F (31°C), but the RealFeel hits 100°F (38°C), maintaining the heat stress that’s gripped the city.
By Thursday, skies will be dominated by overcast conditions and scattered thunderstorms, all wrapped in dense humidity. Roadways and highways may see ponding water, especially in low-lying spots, as the mercury holds at 82°F (28°C), though it’ll feel closer to 88°F (31°C).
Friday brings a slight reprieve, with mixed skies and only a couple of early showers. Interestingly, the RealFeel will be slightly cooler than the actual air temperature — 81°F (27°C) versus 82°F (28°C) — offering a small but welcome psychological break from the relentless heat.
But don’t count on it holding. Saturday and Sunday return to the low 80s°F (around 27°C), but the RealFeel will spike once again, and with it, the humidity and rainfall return. Expect showers, sticky air, and the kind of sweaty discomfort typical of a New York July weekend.
Keep umbrellas handy and prepare for another week of unrelenting moisture and midsummer volatility across the five boroughs.
