Rhode-Island-0807 - Weather Rhode Island: heat index hits 96°F in Providence
SHARE

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – A heat advisory remains in effect across northern and central Rhode Island, as hot air masses combined with intense humidity are pushing feels-like temperatures close to 96°F (35.5°C).

The National Weather Service warns that the actual high on Monday, July 7 will hover around 86°F (30°C) in the Providence metro area, but humidity levels exceeding 85% will make conditions oppressive. As of 6:51 a.m., the temperature had already reached 76°F (24°C), with relative humidity at a stifling 88%.

The heat advisory is in place through 8 p.m. Monday, urging residents in urban neighborhoods, especially in Providence, Cranston, and Pawtucket, to be cautious under prolonged sun exposure. No major cooling trends are expected during the day.

A slight chance of showers may arrive between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., but partly sunny conditions are likely to dominate the daylight hours. Despite the possibility of clouds, the heat index will remain elevated.

According to the latest forecast discussion, unstable atmospheric conditions will return later this evening, bringing periods of rain and storms that may linger through much of next week. Tuesday carries the potential for isolated severe thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy rain and localized flash flooding. A noticeable cool-down is projected for the middle to late part of the week across Rhode Island.
