High alert issued for Carolina Beach due to shark sightings and dangerous rip currents
CAROLINA BEACH, North Carolina (Tuesday, July 9, 2025 — 9:00 a.m. ET) — The National Weather Service has released a coastal hazard statement following multiple shark sightings in the waters off Carolina Beach, reported by Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue on Monday afternoon.
The alert highlights a notable increase in shark activity just offshore. Swimmers, surfers, and beachgoers in the area are being strongly advised to remain cautious as conditions are not only affected by marine wildlife, but also by highly dangerous rip currents.
According to the NWS, strong rip currents are forecasted and will continue to pose a threat through 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 7. These currents, capable of pulling even the most experienced swimmers far from the shoreline, present serious hazards along much of the North Carolina coast, particularly near Carolina Beach.
The NWS warning emphasized the following: “Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a current, do not panic—relax and float. Avoid swimming against the flow. Instead, try to move parallel to the beach. If escape is impossible, face the shore and signal for help.”
With summer crowds increasing along the Atlantic coast, both marine experts and weather officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
