Humidity intensifies across Connecticut with threat of severe storms
Connecticut is bracing for a sweltering stretch of summer weather this week, marked by oppressive humidity, scattered downpours, and the potential for severe thunderstorms, especially on Tuesday and Friday.
According to WFSB 3 TV meteorologists, Monday was already declared a First Alert Weather Day due to soaring dew points that have pushed humidity into uncomfortable territory across Litchfield and Fairfield counties. An Air Quality Alert is also in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. today due to elevated ground-level ozone levels, which could impact those with asthma or other respiratory sensitivities.
While only a few isolated showers and thunderstorms were expected this afternoon, Tuesday is shaping up to be a more volatile day, meteorologically speaking.
Tuesday: steamy heat and severe thunderstorm risk
Expect a foggy start on Tuesday morning, but the fog will give way to blazing temperatures and stifling humidity. Afternoon heat index values could soar between 95°F and 100°F (35°C–38°C), creating uncomfortable and potentially hazardous conditions, particularly for vulnerable populations.
As a cold front sweeps into the region from the west, scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop in the afternoon and evening hours. Some of these storms could bring heavy downpours, gusty winds, and frequent lightning, especially in areas of poor drainage where flooding may occur.
Due to these conditions, Tuesday has also been designated a First Alert Weather Day. Most of Connecticut currently sits under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) for severe weather, but conditions could rapidly evolve.
Wednesday and Thursday: brief relief, more rain possible
Wednesday could offer a slight reprieve from extreme humidity, with highs near 83°F (28°C) in southern Connecticut and 84°F (29°C) in northern areas, and only isolated storms expected. However, the threat for additional rounds of showers remains, especially into the evening hours.
By Thursday, cloud cover increases with a renewed chance for thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. Temperatures will stay in the upper 70s (around 25°C), but humidity remains noticeable.
Friday: humidity returns with widespread storms
Looking ahead to Friday, the oppressive humidity returns in full force. This will create a more unstable atmosphere, increasing the potential for more widespread and intense thunderstorms across Connecticut.
Forecasts currently indicate a 30 to 50 percent chance of showers and storms throughout the day and into the evening, with mostly cloudy skies and high temperatures around 80°F (27°C) in southern Connecticut and 82°F (28°C) in northern areas.
Weekend outlook: sunshine Saturday, storms Sunday
Saturday appears to be the bright spot, with calmer conditions and more sunshine expected. However, Sunday brings back the chance for showers and possible thunderstorms, continuing the active summer pattern.
