Wednesday, July 9, 2025 – DURHAM, North Carolina – The ABC11 Weather Team has declared today a First Alert Day for central North Carolina, due to the potential for strong afternoon thunderstorms bringing heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts, and an elevated flood threat.
Flood Watch in effect across multiple central counties
A large portion of the region remains under a Flood Watch through Thursday morning, including key counties like Durham, Orange, Alamance, Granville, Guilford, Vance, Chatham, Moore, Forsyth, Davidson, Lee, Randolph, Hoke, Scotland, Richmond, Anson, Montgomery, Stanly, Warren, and Person.
Many of these areas are still trying to recover from the devastating impacts of Chantal, which brought historic flooding between Sunday and Monday, leaving the ground already saturated.
Atmospheric instability and damaging winds expected today
With the atmosphere still very humid and unstable, the risk for strong thunderstorms extends through this evening. Slightly stronger atmospheric forcing will support the chance for damaging wind gusts, particularly with any more organized storm cells.
High temperatures today will peak in the low 90s°F (around 32°C), adding to the oppressive humidity across the region.
Unsettled pattern continues Thursday and Friday
On Thursday, July 10, and Friday, July 11, the chances for showers and thunderstorms remain elevated. Conditions will remain favorable for ponding on roads and flooding in low-lying areas, as a moist tropical air mass continues to linger over central North Carolina heading into the weekend.
