GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (Friday, July 12) — Wet and stormy weather is on tap for West Michigan today, with showers and thunderstorms likely through at least part of the day. The most active period looks to be this morning, though additional storms could bubble up again toward evening as humidity builds and temperatures climb.

Today: Early storms, a break, then more possible

Morning commuters across Grand Rapids and surrounding areas may need the windshield wipers as scattered thunderstorms roll through the region. By midday, some areas could catch a break with a few peeks of sunshine, but that won’t last long — pop-up evening storms are still in play. Highs will reach around 85°F (29°C), and it will feel noticeably more humid throughout the day. Southwest winds will range from 10 to 15 mph, helping to stir up the unstable atmosphere.

On the lake: Watch for morning storms, breezy winds

If you’re heading toward Lake Michigan, expect morning storms to make their way along the coast. Beach temperatures will hover in the low 80s°F (27–28°C), with water temperatures in the 60s°F (15–20°C) north of Muskegon, and warming into the 70s°F (21–25°C) further south. Winds will blow from the south-southwest at 10–15 mph, kicking up waves of 1 to 2 feet. Not the most inviting start to a beach day, but improvements are possible by afternoon.

Tonight: Eyes on the west for incoming storms

Forecasters are keeping close tabs on a line of strong storms developing across Wisconsin this evening. Those storms are expected to move east toward Lake Michigan overnight. While the system will likely lose some strength over the lake, there’s no guarantee it won’t still pack a punch by the time it reaches Michigan’s shoreline. Temperatures will stay mild overnight, with lows near 70°F (21°C) and sticky conditions lingering into Saturday.

Saturday: Dry start, then a severe threat builds

The day may start off quiet and cloudy, but by afternoon, things could take a turn. A strong front moving into Lower Michigan may spark a line of strong to severe thunderstorms, especially in areas east of US-131. Highs will climb into the mid to upper 80s°F (29–31°C), and it will feel even warmer with the heat index approaching 90°F (32°C). Humidity levels will remain oppressive for much of the day.

Sunday: A much more comfortable day

After a stormy stretch, Sunday is shaping up to be pleasant, with clouds early in the day giving way to mostly sunny skies by afternoon. Expect highs around 80°F (27°C) and a noticeable drop in humidity, making for a welcome break in the pattern.

Monday: Sunny and seasonably hot

Expect plenty of sunshine Monday as temperatures return to the upper 80s°F (31°C). It’ll be one of the warmer days of the week, with calm skies and dry conditions sticking around through the start of next week.

Midweek: Relief in sight as front approaches

Looking ahead, another cold front is expected to move through the region sometime between Wednesday and Thursday, bringing with it cooler temperatures and a fresh chance for rain and storms. This will likely mark the next shift in our summer weather pattern across West Michigan.
