CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — A stretch of Arch Road in Chesterfield County was shut down this weekend after intense flash flooding swept through the Richmond metro area on Saturday, July 12.
The closure, at the intersection of Arch Road and Redbridge Road, was announced around 3:20 p.m. Sunday by Chesterfield Fire and EMS. Officials say the road is currently blocked off to all traffic except for residents, and it will remain closed until it can be assessed and cleared by VDOT crews.
Emergency responders on scene say a nearby creek overflowed, spilling into the road and making conditions unsafe. Firefighters checked on homes in the area to ensure residents were safe, but no rescues were needed, according to a department spokesperson.
“It floods out here all the time,” one nearby resident told 8News, “but we haven’t seen it this bad in years.”
Nic Clinch, who lives in the neighborhood, said this is the second time this year Arch Road has been flooded. He recalled a severe flood in 2020 when water made it all the way into his garage.
VDOT crews are expected to bring in additional rocks and materials to reinforce the roadway and help manage future runoff. For now, the road will remain closed as crews continue inspections and clean-up efforts.
