Saturday brings the return of humid air and a renewed risk of thunderstorms across Metro Detroit, just as a cold front pushes into Southeast Michigan. After a calm and sunny Friday, conditions shift dramatically this weekend, with the Storm Prediction Center placing the entire region under a Slight Risk (2 out of 5) for severe weather on Saturday.

Saturday: Storms likely by evening, some severe

Much of Saturday will stay dry with partly cloudy skies, but as we move into the late afternoon and evening, scattered thunderstorms will begin to develop. These storms, fueled by warm air surging to highs near 85°F (29°C), could become strong to severe, especially between 4 PM and midnight. The most significant threats will be damaging winds, torrential downpours, and possibly hail. There’s even a small chance for an isolated tornado as the cold front moves in.

Saturday night: Storms taper off after midnight

Storm activity is expected to diminish after midnight, with decreasing cloud cover overnight. Lows will settle around 67°F (19°C), giving way to drier air and more comfortable conditions.

Sunday: Drier weather returns

By Sunday morning, high pressure builds back into the region, clearing out lingering moisture. Expect a mix of sun and clouds and much more stable weather, with highs around 82°F (28°C). The air will feel less humid, making for a pleasant end to the weekend.

Monday: Seasonal and sunny

Monday continues the trend with mostly sunny skies and highs reaching 81°F (27°C). Humidity stays low, and the air feels refreshingly normal for late July in Michigan.

Tuesday into Wednesday: Heat begins to build

By Tuesday, sunshine dominates, and temperatures climb to around 86°F (30°C). But it’s Wednesday when the real heat surge begins. With an upper-level ridge of high pressure settling to the south, hot and humid air will be pushed into Metro Detroit, and highs will soar into the lower 90s°F (32–34°C).

Late week: Heat and storms return

From Thursday into Friday, heat and humidity intensify, with heat index values possibly reaching the upper 90s to low 100s°F (37–39°C). At the same time, the region will be in a favorable position for more thunderstorms, due to its location on the northern edge of the high-pressure dome. Expect intermittent storm chances through the end of the week as tropical air settles over Southeast Michigan.

Stay alert and monitor the forecast closely through the weekend, especially for any severe thunderstorm warnings issued Saturday afternoon or evening across Metro Detroit.
