Severe thunderstorm watch in effect across North Texas

DALLAS, Tuesday, May 6, 2025 — 7:21 a.m. CDT — A volatile weather pattern has returned to North Texas, as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch blankets a broad swath of the region this morning. This alert, issued by the National Weather Service, affects 20 counties, including Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, Collin, Henderson, Navarro, and Ellis.

Damaging wind gusts reaching 65 mph, hailstones as large as 2.5 inches (6.35 cm), and the risk of isolated tornadoes make this a high-impact weather event for the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and surrounding areas. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is already active in portions of the region.

Flood watch compounds the severe threat

Simultaneously, a River Flood Warning and a Flood Watch have been issued, with heavy rainfall expected to exacerbate saturated soils and elevate streams and rivers. Counties under flood alerts include Dallas, Hunt, Denton, Wise, Red River, Freestone, Navarro, Cooke, and Anderson.

Tuesday’s outlook brings widespread rain through the morning and midday, driven by a strong upper-level disturbance sweeping across North Texas. While the tornado threat is expected to migrate south of the Metroplex later today, damaging winds and hail will remain a concern into the afternoon.

Temperatures will struggle to rise, with highs only reaching the 60s (16–20 °C) under persistent cloud cover.

Midweek cooldown, then milder conditions ahead

Wednesday opens cool and cloudy, with the chance of afternoon sunshine pushing temperatures into the upper 70s (25–26 °C). While rain chances linger through Wednesday night, they are low and localized.

Thursday continues the partly cloudy trend, remaining in the mid to upper 70s (24–26 °C), before a weak upper-level system moves through on Friday, potentially bringing increased cloudiness and a brief dip in temperatures.

Mother’s Day weekend shaping up beautifully

By the weekend, North Texas will transition into a mild and tranquil pattern. Saturday is expected to be pleasant, with highs in the 70s (21–25 °C). Sunday, for Mother’s Day, will be picture-perfect: a cool start in the 50s (10–15 °C) followed by sunny skies and afternoon highs near 80°F (27 °C).

Looking ahead to next week, a warming trend will bring highs back into the 80s (27–30 °C) with increasing humidity returning to the forecast.
