Severe weather continues to strike southern Louisiana, and St. Mary Parish has taken the brunt of the impact. After Tuesday evening’s intense rainfall and strong wind gusts, significant flooding and structural damage have been reported across Morgan City and surrounding areas.
Extensive flooding and structural destruction in Morgan City
As of Wednesday morning, May 7, 2025, the aftermath of the storm reveals a troubling scene in St. Mary Parish. Dozens of roads remain flooded, rendering some neighborhoods temporarily inaccessible. The rain, combined with forceful winds, toppled trees, damaged rooftops, and caused widespread disruption to businesses and services.
A notable casualty of the storm is Sharon’s Tastee Freeze, a well-known diner in Morgan City, which has suffered serious structural damage. The building is now closed indefinitely, and crews are assessing how much of the structure can be salvaged.
Widespread residential impact and power infrastructure damage
Residents across the parish have shared photos of the destruction, including collapsed carports, damaged vehicles, and flooded interiors. One striking image shows a car crushed beneath the remains of a garage roof, underscoring the force of the winds that accompanied the rain.
The St. Mary Parish substation, located in Morgan City, was also severely damaged, with debris scattered around the facility. This could potentially impact local electrical services, though crews are reportedly working on emergency stabilization.
More rain expected Wednesday evening
According to The Storm Station meteorologists, heavy rain is expected to continue through Wednesday night, posing further flash flood risks. Saturated ground and obstructed drainage systems increase the likelihood of additional flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
