From Wednesday to Friday, heavy rain and wind to sweep the region

Boston, Massachusetts – A powerful Nor’easter is forecasted to hit eastern Massachusetts, including Boston, starting Wednesday, May 22, and continuing through Friday, May 24.

This incoming coastal storm is expected to bring persistent rainfall, strong wind gusts, and flooding risks, especially in low-lying areas and regions with poor drainage systems.

Expected conditions: Wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding

According to early projections, rainfall totals may range between 1.5 and 3 inches (38–76 mm) across the Greater Boston area, with some isolated areas possibly exceeding those amounts. The heaviest downpours are likely to occur late Wednesday into Thursday morning, with localized flooding concerns intensifying during high tide cycles.

Wind gusts are forecast to reach 35 to 45 mph (56–72 km/h) in coastal zones, with potential peaks of up to 50 mph (80 km/h) along Cape Cod and the South Shore. The strongest winds are expected between Thursday afternoon and early Friday morning, raising the risk of downed trees, power outages, and hazardous travel conditions, especially near the Massachusetts Bay coastline.

Travel and safety impacts for Boston area residents

Boston commuters should prepare for delays, particularly during Thursday’s morning and evening rush hours, as the heaviest rain aligns with peak travel times. Air travel through Logan International Airport may also be affected by wind-related delays or cancellations, especially on Thursday.

City officials are urging residents to secure loose outdoor objects, avoid coastal roads during high tide, and monitor local emergency alerts as conditions evolve. Crews are also preparing to respond to potential power outages and clearing debris from major roads.
