A rainy stretch continues across Minnesota

A long-lasting rain event has taken hold across Minnesota, soaking much of the state and bringing relief to dry ground—but also making outdoor plans a challenge, especially for those in the Twin Cities.

The rainfall began in earnest Monday evening, and Tuesday, May 20, is marked by steady, wind-driven rain. Daytime highs will hover around 50°F (10°C), but persistent winds will make conditions feel colder and more uncomfortable. The weather system is widespread, but the intensity and totals will vary significantly across the state.

Conditions expected to improve midweek

By Wednesday, showers are expected to gradually taper off, bringing a pause in the gloomy pattern. The outlook becomes noticeably better by Thursday, with the Memorial Day weekend promising drier and warmer weather. Temperatures are forecast to climb back into the 70s°F (around 21°C) by Sunday, offering a welcome change just in time for the holiday.

How much rain is expected across Minnesota?

Rainfall totals will not be uniform. Here’s a breakdown by region:

  • South central Minnesota, including areas like Mankato, could receive up to 3 inches (about 76 mm) of rain.
  • Southeastern Minnesota, including Rochester, is looking at 1 to 2 inches (25–50 mm).
  • The Twin Cities are expected to collect up to 2 inches (50 mm), especially in the southwest metro, such as Eden Prairie and Shakopee.
  • Rainfall amounts sharply decline northward. From Brainerd and farther north, less than 1 inch (25 mm) is expected, and some areas may remain nearly dry.

Memorial Day weekend outlook: warmer and calmer

Following the midweek clearing, Thursday through Sunday appears calmer and increasingly warm, marking a pleasant turn ahead of Memorial Day. Sunshine and temperatures in the low to mid 70s°F (21–24°C) should make for ideal weekend conditions, particularly for those in southern and central Minnesota.

Stay tuned for updates as local conditions can still vary, especially with wind and storm development across the region.
