Chilly, stormy conditions sweep across New Jersey

A stubborn nor’easter is drenching New Jersey this week, bringing heavy rainfall, gusty winds and unseasonably cool temperatures just ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. While this time of year typically ushers in early summer vibes, the Garden State is instead dealing with early spring-like weather. According to forecasters from the National Weather Service, the state will remain under the grip of widespread rain through Thursday night, with up to 1.5 inches (38 mm) of accumulation expected in some areas.

Wednesday through Friday: Cold air and persistent rainfall

Across North, Central, and South Jersey, Wednesday marks the beginning of a wet and blustery period, with highs only in the mid to upper 50s Fahrenheit (13–15°C). Easterly winds, particularly in coastal regions, are expected to gust between 25 and 40 mph (40–64 km/h), increasing the chill factor.

By Wednesday night, temperatures will dip further, with lows in the mid to upper 40s (7–10°C) statewide. Rain will continue overnight, with the heaviest precipitation hitting Central and South Jersey, where up to one inch (25 mm) may fall.

Thursday brings continued rainfall, which will begin to taper off by evening. High temperatures will remain cool, hovering between 53°F and 60°F (12–16°C). The chance of isolated thunderstorms, especially in Southern New Jersey, is elevated in the afternoon hours. Some minor coastal flooding is also likely during high tide cycles along the Jersey Shore.

Friday: Gradual improvement begins

Friday signals the beginning of gradual clearing, though cloud cover and occasional showers are still possible, mainly in the afternoon. Temperatures will rise slightly into the upper 50s to mid-60s Fahrenheit (15–18°C) across the state, with light west winds bringing drier air.

Friday night will be partly cloudy, with overnight lows settling around 46°F (8°C).

Weekend outlook: Drier, warmer conditions emerging

By Saturday, skies will turn partly to mostly sunny, with highs ranging from 62°F to 66°F (17–19°C). Saturday night will stay seasonably cool, with clear skies and temperatures in the upper 40s (8–9°C).

Sunday brings bright sunshine and a slight rebound in temperatures, especially in South Jersey, where highs could touch 69°F (21°C). Northern and central regions will see temperatures in the mid to upper 60s (18–20°C).

Memorial Day: A mostly dry holiday with isolated chances of rain

Forecast models suggest that Monday will bring mostly pleasant weather, though a slight chance of isolated rain showers lingers across parts of the state. Highs are expected to reach the upper 60s to low 70s (20–22°C), offering a promising start to the summer season — albeit a bit damp and delayed.

Stay tuned for updated forecasts as Memorial Day approaches and conditions continue to evolve throughout New Jersey.
