A brutal cold front descends across Argentina

An intense cold wave is sweeping across Argentina, bringing what experts are calling “extreme cold” conditions. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued alerts warning of subzero temperatures across much of the country, combined with significant rainfall in the early stages of the event.

Starting today, Wednesday, May 28, and continuing through Saturday, May 31, the cold is expected to intensify dramatically. According to meteorologist José Luis Stella, the ongoing air mass collision will also trigger thunderstorms on Tuesday, setting the stage for a deep plunge in temperatures.

Temperatures plummet across Patagonia and central Argentina

Minimum temperatures in the central and northern regions of the country are forecast to fall to 25°F (-4°C). However, conditions will be even harsher in Patagonia, where the thermometer may drop as low as 14°F (-10°C) or below — and afternoon readings could remain below freezing.

Meteorologists say Wednesday could be the coldest day of the year, even though winter has yet to officially begin. The event marks the start of seasonal cold air incursions, and experts suggest that in the coming weeks, the severity of the cold will be further analyzed to determine whether this qualifies as a full-fledged cold wave.

Health authorities issue public cold weather guidance

In response to the frigid forecast, the Ministry of Health has emphasized the health risks posed by extreme cold, especially for older adults and those with chronic illnesses. Citizens are urged to follow the national vaccination calendar to prevent respiratory infections such as the flu, which become more prevalent in autumn and winter.

Precautions during extreme cold include dressing in multiple layers, avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure, and staying informed through official communication channels. Households are advised to seal windows and doors, insulate walls, and plug cracks or leaks to retain indoor heat.

In addition, maintaining a balanced diet, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding sudden temperature changes are strongly encouraged. Smoking indoors should be avoided to reduce the risk of respiratory illness.

Authorities also warn against alcohol consumption during extreme cold. Although alcohol may provide a temporary sensation of warmth by dilating blood vessels, it can lead to dangerous heat loss and lower core body temperature, increasing the risk of hypothermia.
