Hotter days ahead for Oregon
Oregon could be in for a scorching and parched summer, with early forecasts suggesting higher-than-average temperatures and below-normal rainfall across most of the state. The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center estimates a 50% to 60% chance that July, August and September 2025 will bring warmer than normal conditions across much of the region.
For context, historical averages from the National Weather Service in Portland show that the average maximum temperature at Portland International Airport reaches 81.9°F (27.7°C) in July, 81.1°F (27.3°C) in August, and 76.7°F (24.8°C) in September. These figures may soon be eclipsed, especially if the early signs hold true.
Rainfall levels expected to dip
Alongside the heat, the precipitation outlook is also leaning dry. Much of Oregon is forecast to receive less-than-normal rainfall during June, July and August, according to NOAA. The westernmost coastal zones offer the only element of uncertainty, with an equal chance of normal, above, or below average rainfall.
For comparison, average July rainfall at Portland International Airport is typically 0.51 inches (13 mm), 0.54 inches (13.7 mm) in August, and 1.52 inches (38.6 mm) in September. If this summer trends drier, vegetation stress and wildfire risks could become increasingly relevant concerns.
A glimpse back at last summer’s extremes
Portland recorded its hottest July on record in 2024, and even though August felt milder, it still registered slightly above average temperatures. That pattern may continue — or intensify — this year. The recent warm spell in May could be a harbinger of what lies ahead.
Climate patterns and regional variability
Though much of Oregon may face intensifying heat, coastal regions like Newport, Florence, and Astoria might experience more temperate variability, thanks to the marine influence. Inland areas such as Medford, Bend, and The Dalles, however, are more exposed to extended dry spells and heat waves.
