Increasing rain and thunder chances into Sunday
TUCSON, Arizona — Saturday, May 31, 2025 (local time) — After a partly cloudy Friday, weather conditions in Southern Arizona are evolving toward a wetter and stormier weekend, with Sunday shaping up as the most active weather day.
Storm outlook for the weekend
Today’s afternoon highs are expected to remain warm, though slightly below average by Sunday, when temperatures dip back below normal. While dry conditions will dominate much of the day today and Saturday, a few areas—especially along the Arizona–New Mexico border—might see mainly dry thunderstorms, which could bring dry lightning risks.
By Sunday, the dynamics shift significantly. Widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast across the region, continuing into early Monday morning. Although not all areas will experience strong convection, the moisture profile suggests increasing instability and elevated chances of precipitation.
Short-term and extended forecast
Saturday continues with only a slight risk of isolated storms, especially in eastern Arizona, but Sunday brings the best window for more organized rainfall. The cooler air mass accompanying the storm system will linger into the first half of next week, bringing a temporary return to below-normal temperatures for Tucson and surrounding counties like Cochise.
By Monday afternoon, expect a return to dry skies, with a more seasonal warming trend likely by mid-week.
