On the afternoon of Sunday, June 8, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 4:30 p.m. for the City of Williamsburg, located in the heart of Eastern Virginia.
Storm watch in place across several Central Virginia counties
A severe thunderstorm watch — meaning that conditions are favorable for the development of severe storms — is currently in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday night for the following Central Virginia localities:
Amelia County, Brunswick County, Charles City County, City of Colonial Heights, City of Emporia, City of Petersburg, Dinwiddie County, Greensville County, Lunenburg County, Mecklenburg County, Nottoway County, Prince Edward County, Prince George County, and Sussex County.
What to expect: strong wind gusts, downed trees, and power outages
According to forecasts, storms may bring damaging winds capable of knocking down trees and power lines, with the risk of localized blackouts in affected areas.
If you’re in one of the warned locations, move immediately to an interior room on the lowest floor of your building, away from windows, and remain there until the threat has passed.
The weather is being closely monitored by the NWS office in Wakefield, and additional warnings or updates may be issued throughout the evening.
An unstable day for the East Coast
This wave of severe weather is part of a broader frontal system sweeping across the East Coast, bringing atmospheric instability, high humidity, and sharp temperature contrasts between air masses. Temperatures in affected areas are ranging between 79°F and 85°F (26°C – 29°C), fueling the development of towering cumulonimbus clouds and intense thunderstorms.
