Friday, June 14 – A final dose of coastal thunderstorms before summer settles in
One more stormy day for coastal Houston
Houston faces one last round of widespread storms today, Friday, June 14, especially along the coast, before conditions begin shifting toward a more typical early summer pattern. After yesterday’s generous rainfall, we’ll have one more shot at scattered thunderstorms, mostly south and east of Highway 59/I-69, which serves as the dividing line between higher and lower rain risks.
A quiet morning, but a lively afternoon ahead
The day starts off quiet, but that will change by late morning. After 10 or 11 AM, expect scattered downpours and thunderstorms to blossom, especially across areas like Galveston, Matagorda Bay, and the immediate coastal region. A Flood Watch remains in effect for counties from Louisiana to Matagorda, where hourly rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches could cause street flooding, particularly on Galveston Island.
As the day progresses, storms will spread inland northwest, though they’ll remain more scattered away from the coast. Most of the rain should wind down after sunset.
Weekend: isolated sea breeze showers return
Beginning Saturday, June 15, the trough over the Arklatex will shift toward the Mississippi Valley, reducing support for widespread thunderstorms and signaling a return to more classic mid-June weather. This means isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms driven by the sea breeze drifting in from the Gulf of Mexico.
Most areas will stay dry, but a few folks could get a refreshing shower, especially on Sunday, when coverage looks slightly higher than Saturday. Any storms that do form should be brief and localized, with little disruption to outdoor plans.
Typical early summer heat makes a comeback
As we head into the weekend, high temperatures will climb back into the low 90s°F (32–34°C), with a few mid 90s°F (35°C) possible inland. Morning lows will hover around 78°F (26°C), with increasing humidity signaling the return of classic summer heat.
Next week: high pressure builds in from the Gulf
Next week, high pressure from the Southwest will flatten out as a new ridge builds westward from the Gulf Coast toward Texas, ushering in more stable conditions. Monday will resemble the weekend, but Tuesday and Wednesday could bring slightly elevated rain chances before a dry stretch arrives late in the week.
Temperatures will stay near mid-June normals, with highs consistently around 91–93°F (33–34°C).
