  • Heavy rain and flash flooding threat in western Mexico
  • Potential U.S. coastal impact being monitored

NEW YORK, Monday, June 16, 2025 – Iconic meteorologist Jim Cantore has issued a warning about a “different” tropical storm that may be heading toward the West Coast of the United States. The fifth named system of the season, Tropical Storm Dalilia, is being tracked closely, and according to Cantore, it could behave very differently from the previous four.

Although Dalilia has officially dissipated, the National Hurricane Center reported on Monday morning that a new area of disturbed weather is forming in the eastern Pacific, near the coasts of El Salvador, Guatemala, and southern Mexico. The center posted the following alert:

“#Dalilia has dissipated, but another area in the eastern #Pacific is likely to become a #TropicalDepression within 48 hours. Hazardous winds and seas are possible, regardless of tropical development, offshore El Salvador, Guatemala, and southern Mexico with this low.”

Despite Dalilia’s current status, Cantore, a veteran on-camera meteorologist for The Weather Channel, pointed out that hi-resolution forecast models suggest this new system could develop significantly before making landfall.

“Our 5th named storm will be much different than the previous 4. This one is very likely coming ashore,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), where he has more than 1.3 million followers.

Heavy rain and flash flooding threat in western Mexico

The threat isn’t limited to storm formation. The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for heavy rainfall today across parts of western Mexico.

Additional precipitation amounts of 1 to 2 inches (about 25–50 mm) are expected in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán, with isolated totals reaching up to 9 inches (about 229 mm) near the coast. These rainfalls could result in flash flooding and mudslides, though the frequency of such hazards is expected to gradually decrease later in the day.

Potential U.S. coastal impact being monitored

While the current disturbance remains offshore near Central America, meteorologists are keeping a close watch on the system’s trajectory and evolution, especially for any possible impacts along the Southern California coastline. In the coming days, there’s potential for residual rainfall or unusual surf conditions reaching U.S. shores, depending on how the storm develops.
