Severe thunderstorms swept through Montgomery County, Maryland on Thursday evening, leaving behind a trail of fallen trees, power outages, and road closures. The Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services (MCFRS) reported multiple incidents that severely impacted traffic and infrastructure across the region.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the River Road corridor, between the Beltway and Falls Road, is currently facing multiple closures. River Road is completely shut down near Persimmon Tree Road, and traffic is also blocked in front of the Congressional Country Club. Another closure has been confirmed on Falls Road, in the 9500 block.

Emergency crews responded to several locations where trees crashed into homes, vehicles caught fire, and live wires created hazardous conditions:

In Bethesda, a tree fell onto a house on 6200 Vorlich Lane near Barr Road, though no injuries were reported. A similar situation occurred on Mohican Drive, where downed trees and a vehicle fire led to a full road blockage near Rivercrest Court.

In Potomac, a tree fell onto a house on 11,000 Home Place Lane, near Piney Glen Lane, with no reported injuries.

In Silver Spring, two homes were struck by trees — one on 7900 Takoma Avenue near Richmond Avenue, and another on 1600 Noyes Drive near 2nd Avenue.

Kensington was also affected, with a tree on a home at 11300 Palisades Court, near Sims Drive.

A major crash occurred at Connecticut Avenue and East West Highway, involving a bus and a passenger vehicle. Initial reports mentioned a tree landing on a vehicle with possible entrapment, but emergency medics later confirmed no serious injuries and no individuals trapped. Multiple lanes remain blocked at this intersection.

Additional tree damage was reported at the intersection of Falls Road and River Road.

As of this morning in New York (Friday, June 20, 2025, 8:30 AM EDT), officials continue to assess the damage, while drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid the affected areas and monitor local advisories for real-time updates on road safety and power restoration.

Temperatures in the region are expected to hover around 86°F (30°C) today, with humid conditions lingering as the storm system gradually moves out.
