June heat wave turns dangerous in New Jersey

As of today, Monday, June 23, 2025, New Jersey is entering the peak of a prolonged and hazardous heat wave, with daily highs expected to soar past 90°F (32°C) for at least six consecutive days across much of the state. The most extreme heat is forecast for today and tomorrow, when temperatures could hit 100°F (38°C), pushing the heat index — or “feels like temperature” — well beyond 100°F (38°C) in many locations. This level of heat and humidity is not just uncomfortable — it is dangerous.

The hottest stretch in New Jersey since 2022

This marks New Jersey’s most intense stretch of heat since July 2022, when Newark Liberty International Airport recorded five straight days of triple-digit highs. That period still stands out as one of the most sweltering sequences in recent memory. Meanwhile, Philadelphia International Airport, a key regional station, has not touched 100°F since July 18, 2012 — a streak that could now be broken.

What qualifies as a heat wave — and why this one matters

A heat wave, by standard meteorological definitions, is three or more consecutive days with highs reaching 90°F (32°C) or higher. But in New Jersey, even a single weather station consistently recording those temperatures is enough to declare a “Jersey heat wave”. When this heat is paired with high dew points and stifling humidity, it becomes even more oppressive.

The heat index, also referred to as the apparent temperature, is a more accurate representation of how this combination affects the human body. A dry 90°F day is harsh, but a humid 90°F day can feel closer to 105°F (41°C) — placing severe physiological stress on anyone exposed for long periods.

The term “dangerous heat” is not used lightly

The phrase dangerous heat is not meteorological jargon — it’s a real public health alert. When humidity and temperatures climb to the point where the human body struggles to cool itself, the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and cardiovascular stress increases dramatically. According to today’s forecast, several parts of Central and Southern New Jersey, including areas near Trenton, New Brunswick, and the Delaware Valley, are likely to experience a heat index above 105°F (41°C).

Why this New Jersey heat is particularly severe

This current weather pattern is not simply hot — it’s unrelenting. The lack of relief overnight, when temperatures remain in the upper 70s°F (25–27°C), prevents the body from recovering after daytime exposure. In urban centers like Newark, Elizabeth, and Camden, the heat island effect will exacerbate overnight warmth, pushing lows into the 80s°F (27–29°C).

In addition, power grids are expected to be under high demand, increasing the risk of brownouts or blackouts in densely populated neighborhoods. Transportation systems, particularly in Northeast Corridor rail lines and interstates, may experience heat-related disruptions.

This heat wave is more than “just summer”

Yes, heat waves are part of summer in New Jersey, but this particular event stands out for its intensity, duration, and the widespread reach of its humid air mass. It’s the fusion of oppressive heat, tropical humidity, and limited cooling opportunities that elevates this week into the category of dangerous.

Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow emphasizes that this is not just typical seasonal weather. The combination of factors — from urban heat effects, vulnerable infrastructure, and public health risks, to the historical rarity of such extended triple-digit heat — makes this stretch of weather a serious threat to New Jersey residents and the state’s broader ecosystem.
