Saturday, June 22, delivered one of the most intense days of heat so far this summer in Illinois, with heat index values—or “feels-like” temperatures—soaring well past 100°F (38°C) across the Chicago metro area and parts of northwest Indiana.
NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologists, including Kevin Jeanes, confirmed that excessive heat warnings are in full effect, and the pattern is expected to persist for several days. With humidity levels remaining high and temperatures climbing, dangerous heat continues to blanket the region.
The highest heat index recorded on Saturday was a staggering 110°F (43.3°C) in Beecher, a community in Will County, just south of Chicago. This “feels-like” temperature was matched by Romeoville, where the National Weather Service office is located.
Not far behind, several neighborhoods within Chicago recorded heat indices close to these extreme values. North Park peaked at 109°F (42.8°C), while Lincoln Park reached 108°F (42.2°C). Even the typically cooler areas near Midway and O’Hare International Airport reported 104°F (40°C) and 106°F (41.1°C), respectively.
Northwest Indiana shared in the heat wave’s intensity. The Gary Airport documented a 109°F (42.8°C) heat index, while Portage in Porter County reached 106°F (41.1°C).
