Tuesday was the hottest day in over a decade for many along the East Coast, with temperatures shattering long-standing records from Massachusetts to Washington, DC. The relentless heat wave, driven by a powerful heat dome, reached its dangerous peak as the week began, affecting millions across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

New York City nearly reached a triple-digit high, with Central Park climbing to 99°F (37°C) by mid-afternoon — a level not seen in June since 1966. At John F. Kennedy International Airport, thermometers hit 102°F (39°C) on Monday, the highest ever for June. Nearby, LaGuardia Airport matched its June record with 101°F (38°C).

Philadelphia broke its early summer record by hitting 101°F (38°C) Tuesday, marking its first 100-degree day since 2012. The heat wave even forced the Washington Monument to close and pushed DC’s rail temperatures to 135°F (57°C), with Metro trains reducing speed to prevent damage.

Boston recorded 102°F (39°C) — a new all-time high for the month — while Newark, New Jersey matched its June record with 103°F (39°C). Providence, Rhode Island also joined the list of record-breakers, soaring to 100°F (38°C).

But the heat hasn’t just broken records — it’s strained infrastructure and put lives at risk. In St. Louis, a woman died after spending days without air conditioning or water. In New Jersey, more than 150 people were evaluated for heat-related illnesses at high school graduations. And in New Hampshire, two teen hikers were rescued after falling in and out of consciousness while climbing Gap Mountain under oppressive heat and humidity.

In Norfolk, Massachusetts, two firefighters were hospitalized with heat exhaustion, and a rehabilitation truck was deployed to support emergency crews. Train service from Baltimore to North Carolina experienced significant disruptions, including Amtrak cancellations and temperature-induced speed restrictions.

Energy providers are also feeling the pressure. Con Edison urged New York City residents to conserve power, warning that the electric grid is under heavy strain. “We’re asking customers to cut usage to protect the system,” the utility said.

Governor Kathy Hochul reminded residents to find cooling centers, especially seniors and those with health concerns. “Working together, we can get through this critical period,” she said.

The worst of the heat is expected to linger through Thursday, with the National Weather Service maintaining a level 4 out of 4 extreme heat risk from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic. Tuesday was likely the peak, but Wednesday remains very hot, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic, where more temperature records could fall.

By Thursday, temperatures will dip closer to seasonal norms, especially in the Northeast, with highs mostly in the 70s (21–26°C) and 80s (27–32°C). Some parts of the Mid-Atlantic may still see highs in the 90s (32–35°C).

Friday brings a return to typical late June weather, with cooler overnight lows finally offering some relief. However, the Climate Prediction Center warns that this heat wave may just be the beginning of a much hotter-than-normal summer for the Lower 48.
