Phoenix continues to shine—literally. According to a recent study released by Niche.com in early June, this Arizona city ranks first among urban areas with the highest number of sunny days in the United States. It’s no surprise it’s nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun”, with an average of 211 sunny days each year.
The ranking was based on data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, cross-referenced with the overall Best Cities in America list. Only cities that met Niche’s livability standards were considered, ensuring a well-rounded selection.
Phoenix stands out as a fast-growing metropolis offering a balance of urban energy and suburban comfort, with a climate that’s ideal for outdoor activities in the spring, fall, and winter. Summers, however, are intensely hot, with temperatures frequently soaring above 105°F (41°C).
Coming in at No. 2 is another Southwestern icon: Las Vegas, Nevada, boasting 210 sunny days per year. It’s a great destination for those chasing the sun among resorts, casinos, and desert landscapes.
At No. 3 is Fresno, California, with an average of 194 sunny days. Residents describe Fresno as having the convenience of a city with the feel of a small town, making it especially appealing for both living and visiting.
El Paso, Texas, claims the No. 4 spot, also with 193 days of sunshine annually, followed closely by Tucson, Arizona, at No. 5 with the same number. However, Tucson ranked slightly lower due to its overall Niche grade of B+, compared to El Paso’s A-.
The remainder of the list includes predictably sunny destinations across California, offering consistently dry and bright conditions. For anyone dreaming of a sun-filled lifestyle or vacation, these cities stand out as top picks.
