Thousands of customers across Massachusetts were left without electricity on Tuesday night, as the state endured its hottest day of the year — and one of the most extreme heat events in decades.
By 10:00 p.m., the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency reported a total of 13,556 power outages. The counties most severely impacted were Norfolk, Suffolk, and Middlesex, with outages especially concentrated in Westford and Tyngsborough, where more than 10 percent of households were left without power. In Boston, the largest number of reported outages hit approximately 4,760 customers.
The blackouts came amid a brutal heat wave, as temperatures soared into the triple digits, with the heat index reaching 110°F (43°C).
Tuesday’s searing temperatures set a new all-time record for the month of June in Boston, officially making it the hottest June day ever documented in the city. It was also the fourth hottest day on record in Boston, and the most intense heat since July 1977.
