Severe weather for Monday, June 30: intense heat and hailA dangerous heatwave continues to grip Spain, placing nearly the entire country under official weather alerts. Today, Monday, June 30, temperatures are expected to soar up to 108°F (42°C) in parts of Andalusia and Extremadura, while violent storms with hail are forecast across multiple northern and central provinces, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Heatwave triggers orange and yellow alerts nationwide
An orange alert — indicating significant risk due to extreme heat — has been issued for Andalusia, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Navarre, Basque Country, La Rioja, and the Valencian Community.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert — highlighting moderate risk for specific activities — affects Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Murcia, and the Canary Islands.
In the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria could see highs of 93°F (34°C), alongside powerful wind gusts of up to 44 mph (70 km/h) across several islands, maintaining a yellow wind alert.
Extremely high temperatures expected across the peninsula
Across continental Spain, maximum temperatures will fluctuate between 99°F (37°C) and 108°F (42°C). In the Basque Country, especially the inland areas of Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, as well as in the Cuenca mountains and the Huesca Pyrenees, highs of 99°F (37°C) are expected.
The hottest conditions will strike Andalusia and Extremadura, particularly in Córdoba and Seville’s countryside, the Guadalquivir Valley in Jaén, and regions like Morena, Condado, and the Guadiana lowlands in Badajoz, where temperatures will climb to 108°F (42°C).
Huelva will also suffer intense heat, with Aracena, Andévalo, and Condado reaching up to 106°F (41°C). Similarly, the inland south of Valencia will record triple-digit temperatures, with overnight lows remaining uncomfortably high.
Severe heat will also affect Lleida and Tarragona in Catalonia, the Ebro valley in Zaragoza, the southern region of Huesca, and areas of Badajoz like the Extremaduran Siberia, Barros, and La Serena.
Hailstorms and intense wind in northern and central regions
Alongside the scorching heat, severe thunderstorms are approaching. The AEMET warns that these storms may bring hail and very strong wind gusts to several regions, with the most affected areas expected to be Madrid, Castilla y León, Asturias, Cantabria, Catalonia, and parts of Galicia.
These communities remain under a yellow storm alert, with the risk of intense lightning, hailstones, and local wind damage throughout the day.
