Scattered storms bring temporary relief to Georgia’s sweltering heat

ATLANTA, Georgia – A dangerous mix of scorching heat and unsettled summer storms is gripping much of Georgia this week, with daily afternoon thunderstorms expected and heat index values soaring to 105°F (40°C) in some areas. This intense heat wave is amplifying risks of heat-related illness, while storm activity continues to rise across the region.

Strong storms possible Wednesday through Friday

According to FOX 5 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist David Chandley, Georgia is facing “an increased risk of showers and storms over the next couple of days,” particularly from Wednesday afternoon through Friday evening. These scattered thunderstorms, mostly isolated but intense, will be triggered by peak daytime heating, especially across central and eastern Georgia.

Although widespread severe weather is not forecast, strong wind gusts, localized flooding, and frequent lightning could accompany some of these storms.

Heat continues despite returning storms

Despite the increase in rainfall, temperatures are not expected to drop significantly. Daytime highs will remain between 88°F and 95°F (31°C to 35°C) through the weekend, and humidity will keep the heat index as high as 105°F (40°C). These conditions are prompting officials to emphasize awareness and preparation during the hottest part of the day, from late morning through early evening.

Daily forecasts for Georgia cities

Atlanta will see a high near 93°F (34°C) on Wednesday, with a 60% chance of afternoon thunderstorms. On Thursday and Friday, storms remain likely after 2 p.m., and highs will hover near 90°F (32°C).

Rome starts Wednesday with early morning fog, then turns hot and sunny with a high of 93°F (34°C) and storms developing after 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday bring an 80% storm risk and slightly cooler highs around 89°F (32°C).

Athens will hit 94°F (34°C) on Wednesday before afternoon storms roll in. Storm coverage increases to 70% on Thursday and 60% on Friday, with temperatures staying in the low 90s°F (32–33°C). By Sunday and Monday, rain chances taper, but temperatures rise again into the mid-90s°F (35°C).

Gainesville expects a high of 90°F (32°C) with a 60% chance of storms on Wednesday. Through Saturday, expect upper 80s°F (31°C) and an 80% chance of rain each day. By Sunday, sunshine returns with highs near 92°F (33°C).

LaGrange will reach 91°F (33°C) on Wednesday with a 50% chance of thunderstorms. Storms remain likely Thursday and Friday, with highs dipping slightly to around 88–89°F (31–32°C). Over the weekend, storms become more scattered, but temperatures rise back into the low 90s°F (32–33°C).

Eatonton faces one of the highest heat index values on Wednesday, reaching 102°F (39°C). Storms are expected in the afternoon, with continued activity Thursday and Friday as highs settle near 90°F (32°C). This weekend, temperatures push into the mid-90s°F (35°C) with storms lingering.

Rising risk of heat-related illness

Across central and eastern Georgia, the heat index is forecast to stay between 100°F and 105°F (38–40°C) through Saturday, prompting concern from the National Weather Service, which may issue Heat Advisories. The focus remains on avoiding outdoor activity during the hottest hours and staying hydrated.

Atlanta opens cooling center amid soaring temps

To help residents cope with the intense heat, the City of Atlanta will open a cooling center at Selena S. Butler Park, located at 98 William Holmes Borders Senior Dr NE, Atlanta, GA 30312. The facility will provide bottled water and a safe, cool space for those needing relief from the heat.

Typical summer pattern continues across Georgia

This weather pattern—marked by hot, humid days, isolated downpours, and intense afternoon storms—is a hallmark of Georgia’s summer season. With daytime heating driving storm formation and humidity levels staying elevated, residents across the state should expect fast-changing conditions each afternoon and remain alert to weather alerts and storm updates.
