KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Get ready for a stormy end to the workweek. Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Friday afternoon and evening as a cold front moves through the Kansas City area, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours.

Friday: Storm threat ramps up after midday

A few spotty showers may pop up by late morning, but the main threat arrives after 2 p.m., when stronger storms are likely to develop. Some of these storms could turn severe, with gusty winds being the primary concern. While the chance of a tornado is very low, it’s not entirely off the table.

It’s going to be another hot and humid day, with highs reaching around 91°F (33°C) and a heat index near 100°F (38°C). Winds will be out of the south at 10 to 20 mph, helping feed the unstable atmosphere.

Tonight: Warm and muggy with a few showers possible

Skies will continue to cloud up overnight, and it’ll stay warm and humid through the early morning hours. There’s a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm, especially in eastern Kansas and northwest Missouri.

Lows will only dip to around 75°F (24°C) with southerly winds continuing at 10 to 20 mph.

Saturday: Cooler, but still sticky

Saturday brings a bit of a break from the intense heat. A lingering morning shower is possible, but most of the day will be mostly cloudy with lower storm chances. Highs will top out near 84°F (29°C), but humidity will keep things feeling muggy. Winds will remain steady out of the south.

Early next week: Heat returns ahead of another cold front

Looking ahead, temperatures climb back to around 90°F (32°C) early next week before another strong cold front arrives, possibly setting the stage for more storms by midweek.
