Storms prompt cancellations, postponements for Friday events around Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Several Friday night events across the Kansas City metro have been called off or rescheduled as strong storms are expected to roll through the area late this afternoon and into the evening.
Meteorologists at FOX4 say some of the storms could become severe, with the potential for heavy rain, strong winds, and even hail in some spots. They’ll be tracking the system throughout the day and will provide updates on air and online.
One of the higher-profile cancellations is Crown Center’s WeekEnder, a free outdoor movie and music series that was supposed to begin at 6 p.m. Friday with a performance by a local band followed by a screening of “Twisters.” Organizers say the event has been canceled due to the weather forecast. The next WeekEnder is scheduled for July 18.
In Olathe, city officials announced via Facebook that Friday’s Olathe Live! concert at Stagecoach Park has been rescheduled to October 3. The event, which was also set to include a “Touch-A-Truck” activity for children, was called off because of concerns about possible thunderstorms and high winds.
Jackson County’s family movie night at Longview Lake Beach has also been canceled. The event, part of the “Sand Cinema” series, was supposed to show Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” at dusk. Officials said the event has now been rescheduled for July 18, according to a post on X.
Some events are still expected to go ahead, although plans may change depending on how the weather develops.
“Badges, Bikes & Bats,” a community outreach event organized by several Wyandotte County law enforcement agencies, is still on the calendar for 5 to 8 p.m. at Lions Park in Bonner Springs. However, the Bonner Springs Police Department said it may move the event indoors to the Bonner Springs Community Center at 200 E. Third Street if needed. They’ll provide updates on their Facebook page throughout the day.
As storms move into the region, other outdoor events could still be impacted. Stay tuned to FOX4 for the latest on the forecast and any further changes to local events.
