Macon, Ga. — The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a heat advisory for much of Middle Georgia, in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT today. With the heat index expected to reach up to 105°F (40.5°C), forecasters are warning that the combination of intense heat and high humidity could create dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors.
The advisory covers a wide area, including cities like Macon, Warner Robins, Dublin, Swainsboro, Milledgeville, Cordele, Gray, and Thomaston, where residents will feel the full brunt of this midsummer heat wave.
“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” the NWS warned early Monday. The risk is especially high for children, the elderly, and those working outside or without access to air conditioning.
The heat index, which measures how hot it feels when humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature, is projected to soar well into the triple digits. Under these conditions, the human body struggles to cool itself, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
“Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location,” the advisory stated. “Heat stroke is an emergency — call 911.”
Officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity, and check in on neighbors and loved ones, especially those without adequate cooling. Outdoor workers are advised to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
Today’s advisory comes amid a broader stretch of above-average July heat across Georgia, fueled by a stagnant air mass and limited cloud cover, making relief hard to come by.
