PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — A heat advisory is in effect for most of Southern New England, including Rhode Island, starting Tuesday, July 15 at 11 a.m., and will remain active through Thursday, July 17 at 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Heat index values—which combine temperature and humidity—are forecast to reach up to 100°F (37.7°C). The oppressive combination of high temperatures and muggy air will significantly raise the risk of heat-related illnesses during the advisory period.
According to the NWS, temperatures in Providence will climb steadily, reaching 86°F (30°C) on Tuesday, 89°F (31.6°C) on Wednesday, 88°F (31.1°C) on Thursday, and peaking at 90°F (32.2°C) on Friday. These conditions are being driven by a strong high-pressure system positioned just offshore, which will continue to push hot and humid air across the region.
The heat and humidity are forecast to peak on Wednesday, although uncomfortable conditions may linger into Thursday and Friday. A cold front is expected to arrive late Thursday into Friday, possibly triggering scattered showers and thunderstorms, which could help moderate the extreme heat by the upcoming weekend.
Forecasters warn that without proper precautions, the current weather pattern could lead to dangerous heat exposure, especially during the midday and afternoon hours.
