New Jersey-1807

One brutal day of heat and humidity for New Jersey

Thursday, July 17, brings oppressive heat and humidity across New Jersey, marking one of the hottest days of the summer so far. A Heat Advisory is in effect for the entire state, as temperatures surge into the lower 90s°F (around 33°C) with “feels like” values reaching 100–105°F (38–41°C) due to extremely high humidity.

Early Thursday, lingering showers will taper off by around 8 to 9 a.m., after some areas picked up over 2 inches of rain overnight. The atmosphere will then rapidly heat up, driven by a hot, dry westerly breeze that will make even mainland beaches feel sweltering. Only the barrier islands, surrounded by water, may offer a brief break from the heat.

This is officially classified as dangerous heat. The heat index, which combines temperature and humidity to reflect how it really feels, will soar well above 100°F (38°C) in many locations. Jackson Township remains in the spotlight after a tragic lightning strike on Wednesday that killed one person and injured 13 others. Although the storm threat is minimal on Thursday, a brief isolated thunderstorm remains possible during the early evening, especially as the heat begins to retreat.

Overnight, don’t expect much comfort. Even under mostly clear skies, temperatures will struggle to fall below the low 70s°F (21–23°C), keeping conditions sticky and uncomfortable.

Friday New Jersey weather: A refreshing change

Relief arrives with the first significant cold front since early July, finally bringing a break from the muggy air that’s lingered for nearly two weeks. Although a stray shower is possible during the frontal passage, most of Friday looks dry and pleasant.

Expect partly sunny skies and cooler highs in the lower to mid 80s°F (28–30°C). But the real story is the drop in humidity. Dew points will plummet from the oppressive 70s°F down to the refreshing 50s°F, creating a noticeably more breathable and comfortable air mass.

Friday night looks especially pleasant, with overnight lows falling into the 50s and 60s°F (13–18°C) — a welcome contrast to the recent string of warm, humid nights.

Saturday New Jersey weather: Mostly pleasant with a slight rain risk

Saturday continues the trend of comfort, though with a few caveats. The same cold front may stall over South Jersey, introducing the possibility of late-day showers, particularly in southern parts of the state.

Overall, expect a mix of sun and clouds with daytime highs in the 80s°F (27–30°C). Humidity levels remain moderate through most of the day but may begin to climb in the evening as the chance of rain increases into Saturday night.

Sunday New Jersey weather: Humid and stormy again

Sunday will bring a return to unsettled, muggy conditions, making it the least pleasant day of the weekend. Skies will turn mostly cloudy, and dew points will climb back near 70°F (21°C), signaling a humid air mass.

Highs will once again reach the mid to upper 80s°F (29–31°C) — seasonable, but made more uncomfortable by the humidity. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, especially in the afternoon, with the potential for isolated severe weather or localized flooding. The exact timing and intensity of the storms remain uncertain, but the day should be considered active and unstable.

Monday New Jersey weather: Cooler and drier air returns

As we move into early next week, dry and comfortable conditions are expected to return. Monday through Wednesday currently looks sunny with low humidity and high temperatures in the lower to mid 80s°F (28–29°C) — an ideal stretch of mid-July weather for most of New Jersey.

This pleasant break won’t last forever, though, as hotter temperatures and thunderstorm chances are projected to return by late next week.
